This week I've also been tackling #3 on my list of WiPs.
I’m super happy with this peach centre strip
– it’s giving the most delicious lattice effect and pulling the whole quilt together beautifully!
... Over summer I find it's nice to have an easy project to work on, sometimes you just don’t want to think too hard. So, I've been taking a dive back into the vibrant world of these string quilt blocks. I managed to locate 20 9" blocks, and I've made some major progress this week, finishing at 36 blocks✅.
For those curious, here's a few details of my colour story ...
I went for a mixed palette in peach/caramel/purples/blue, repeating many fabrics.
I decided to use a peach print as my center strip in each block, it works well connecting everything up and gives the eye a place to rest on my busy blocks.
My strips were all inconsistent widths throughout, to give that organic look.
And I love how the soft mauves create a true wonky diamond shape where the blocks meet (luckily, I had put aside a little bundle of them, so I was able to continue with this idea).

I also added a few 'lighter' blocks into the mix, and it's all looking so good.
I cut into some larger coordinating fabric pieces from my stash as well as bits & pieces from my scrappy strips & strings basket. I wanted it to feel scrappy but to also have an obvious colour theme running through.
Now it can join the other tops in the ever-growing pile…
Linda

You've been on a lovely blitz of finishing up so many colorful tops this week, I've enjoyed seeing each one and wishing that I could work as quickly as you do getting tops ready for quilting.
ReplyDeleteI always like your quilts, they're so colorful, happy stitching!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you also have white/light strips close to the center setting off your mauve corners. Are you using FPP to make the blocks? They look very precise. I see lots of Anna Maria H/P in your nice palette, which does give cohesion to the top while still being wildly colorful. Using the peach strip in each one was another great idea for tying it all together! Well thought and executed.
ReplyDeleteI was just looking at my bin of strips today and thinking that I need to start a new string quilt. Very fun!
ReplyDeletegood way to use up strings I made a bunch of pillows a couple years ago with some of mine
ReplyDeleteYour string quilt is delightful!
ReplyDeleteWow, another one.
ReplyDeleteThis is a versatile block and I love the way it creates its own patterns. I am impressed with how busy you have been getting these tops finished.
It has a very Summery vibe. Did you use a foundation?
ReplyDeleteVery very nice - I do love a good string quilt.
ReplyDeleteI'll always approve of any quiltmaker choosing to make a string quilt. They have so many great design possibilities, as you've shown. Having one print repeat gives the design more cohesiveness, and I like that. This is coming along nicely. One of my favorite books is "String Quilts" by Elsie M. Campbell. "Picket Fence" is on our bed.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like great fun Linda - the centre strip really is effective.
