colour splash

As you know, I started working on a scrappy courthouse steps block quilt this month as a way to “use up” my scraps. The courthouse steps block is a real favourite one of mine, I've made a few now.  And I've been enjoying an hour here & there to work on this WiP, stitching one block a time.

I'm using a bright & pretty scrappy mix of fabrics, ones I've had for a while. There's a combo of floral RRS, Rifle Paper Co. & Heather Ross for the main fabrics, with coordinating blenders. I love how each block gets its own moment. No overthinking it. Just a big splash of colour & contrast.

Love making something colourful & (potentially)useful out of leftovers in the stash, don't you?

  1. Your blog post title made me smile, Linda... "Color Splash" As though you never make "color splash" quilts, and this is a first. :-) Ha, ha. These Courthouse Step blocks are certainly of the signature Kokaquilts style - gorgeous as always. It's fun to see how you use scraps - leftovers. Well done.

  2. The black and white check is quite effective as the centers of the blocks. I didn't realize how big the blocks were until I saw it on the bed. Gingham check fabric was so popular in the 1940s and 50s and I used it in a lot of my early quilts in the 1960s. I had gingham curtains, I made gingham aprons for my mother and grandmother. Seeing it always takes me back to old memories.

  7. Another fun, fun quilt. Those gingham centres are wonderful with all the bright splashes of colour. Do you mind me asking what size you cut them? They look larger than 2.5", but I could be wrong.

  8. What a wonderful color splash! I really like the black and white centers. Hum, this one certainly is tempting me to make my own courthouse steps. Great job.

  9. WOW! What a winner this is, Linda! I also love the gingham centres. I am making some granny blocks at the moment, using a large gingham for the centres and a smaller check for cornerstones.

  10. I’ve never made Courthouse Steps although I’ve made many other Log Cabin variations. This is delightful! The gingham centers are perfect.
