I'm using the Modern Buzz Saw pattern from 'fabulously fast quilts' by Amy Smart {see here for more details}. Inspiration initially came from some lovely vintage quilts in pinks & indigo. My version of this classic block is a crazy mixture of scrappy modern fabrics with that vintage-y colour scheme. I wanted to add a sprinkling of yellow & green to keep it from being 'just a pink & blue' quilt, and here's where the fun started!
Initially, I thought I needed to make some of the blocks in yellow/green colours, as you can see from the pics below! *But as I progressed, I discovered it was much much easier to pick a pink or indigo fabric with those extra colours actually in it! So I raided my stash again to find a few suitable 9" square candidates!
The two tone background in this block does add an extra dimension, and I feel it's also very reminiscent of those old faded calicos you see in some vintage quilts! {see collage pic # 4 below!}
# 4
Here's a few pics I took while making the blocks.
It's an easy-to-follow process of stack, slice & shuffle....
1. HST
2.Cut it into four strips
3.Reverse the order of the strips
4.Add one extra strip & join together to make 1/4 block
I made up a few more blocks and discovered there were lots of possibilities! I got very side tracked today with a bit of experimental playing! I had fun drifting way, way away from my initial ideas of setting & colour, see...
*EDIT
Ah, now it's looking a bit more like what I had imagined in my head
... enough playing, staying focused now
... truely! :)
Such a cool block, I like the pinky ones best!
ReplyDeleteGreat way of setting these blocks.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of these blocks - I am already mentally reviewing my stash for suitable fabrics!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes, combining colours & choosing fabrics is the best part I think!
DeleteI love the colors you are using, it's going to be lovely! It is a fun and quick block to make, the first time I saw this block was is a Craftsy Class by Kimberly Einmo, one of the first class on Craftsy.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I’m still not too happy with the green, may need to dig a bit deeper into my stash for alternative! Yes, I’m enjoying making these blocks, Amy S. pattern is very easy to follow.
DeleteWow, these are beautiful. I love mixing different whites in with my quilts. Very organic.
ReplyDeleteHow clever is that, I might have to give that a try..........adds to a rapidly growing list! ;-D
ReplyDeleteInteresting! I have one of these quilts started but haven't decided how to sew the blocks together yet. I'm using a free Bonnie Hunter pattern for mine.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like lots of fun!! Thanks for sharing how you did it :-)
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a fun quilt design, I love the prints you are using.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I’m using a mixture from my stash, including Denyse Schmidt, Tula Pink, KaffeF., Oval Elements/ Art Gallery, and some Liberty Lifestyle cottons. I’ll spend a few days now looking at it up on the wall, make sure I like it all! Linda
Deletevery nicely done! I love the experimental nature of these, scrappy in more senses than one!
ReplyDeleteI made a delectable mountain quilt in the same way! Love the versatility of this block and your quilt is going to look gorgeous . Keep focused but have fun too! Thanks for joining up with #scraptastictuesday
ReplyDeleteI see you have been working in a similar way to myself with my butterfly quilt - one idea to begin with in my head but in reality it needed fine tuning/elimination to make it really work. I really like your last version with just the pinks and blues. Thanks also for sharing the how-to photos of this block, one which I have never made but is really quite simple.
ReplyDeleteOh, I think I like that Buzz Saw layout! I've made a Delectable Mountain quilt and loved it so now I'm going to have to put this layout on my scrap list. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCute project, nice idea with cutting and sewing together.
ReplyDeleteGreetings,
Sylvia
