take a bundle of 5" squares....

Last week I broke out my Cotton & Steele that had just been waiting for the 'right' project. I have a variety of different fabrics, small amounts from different collections in the C&S range, and they do all seem to co ordinate well together. I narrowed things down a bit, using a colour scheme of blues and orange, and the occasional 'pops' of jade.

I decided to try out the 'cut up 9 patch' idea, it looked quite quick & easy, perfect for some in-between sewing today. I had cut out lots of 5" squares earlier, and all that was needed today was to throw in the odd low volume lighter fabric and a few others that blended well. After making up the 9patch blocks, you slice & shuffle them around, and then sew them all back together into blocks again. I loved both Heather and Karyn's versions {see here and here} Heather's inspiring version is a development of Quilting in the Rain's Home Sweet Home quilt.

After making a couple of blocks up, I did wonder what was going on, but I checked in with Karyn who reassured me this was how it was supposed to go! It's an interesting pattern - only the very centres line up. Everything else doesn't... Glenys, don't look... you won't be happy at all with this!

I must confess I got a bit bored making these up, so I called it a day when I reached a reasonable size. Next up, making a decision about those setting triangles so I can get it all up off the "design floor"... hm-m-m- do I go light or dark?

Looking at it now, it does all look quite scrapalicious!
Linking up with Cynthia here for 'oh scrap'

  1. Gosh when do you find time to sleep. I quite like the look of the grey/taupe it is on at present - seems to make the blocks POP.

  2. It looks fantastic. If you want Heather's maths for the quarter square triangles to finish it, let me know.

    1. Thank you! I’m just auditioning a couple of options for those setting triangles this morning, as I really wanted to use fabric from my stash.
If not, I may need a shopping trip out to ‘allthingspatchwork’ after all!

  4. I've never done a D9P on the diagonal. GREAT idea!! Something light-ish would finish your quilt off nicely, followed by a dark or bright binding. Good luck with the finishing!!

  5. Most definitely scrapalicious!! I've never seen this way of cutting the 9patch blocks into quarters before, very interesting and speedy too?

  7. The fabrics and colours are gorgeous - my daughter is requesting a blue and orange colour scheme! I hadn't seen a 9 patch cut on the diagonal before it give a really fun result.

  8. That's way more exciting than the disappearing nines I've seen! I think you need a plaid for the setting triangles. (Yeah, I know I always say that...)

  9. I haven't seen the 9-patches sliced on the diagonal before either - just straight up and across...very cool - the unmatching-ness adds to the charm!

  10. I've never done that cut on the diagonal and I really like it! How many 5" squares did you start with?

    1. Yes, it’s a nice change isn’t it?
      Well, I guess I initially cut out around 108 – that makes 12 9-patch blocks, set 3 blocks across X 4 down.
Then you need a few more 9-patch blocks to slice up and add around the edges. This creates the outer triangular edge – which initially causes one to really look & wonder about just how it’s made! Happy sewing!

  11. OOHH this is fun!! Love your fabric choices and love how they resewn blocks don't quite line up, the slight wonkiness makes you take a second look.

  12. Your version looks nice and fresh Linda - I think adding in the low volume squares really helps. This pattern gives a lot of 'bang for your buck' - very effective, but simpler than it looks.

  13. I love your color choices. What about a woven or yarn dyed Essex linen? In a pretty teal or denim blue. I say go shopping :)

  15. I haven't seen this way of cutting a 9 patch before but I like how it has turned out a lot. I like that nothing matches up too.

  16. It's a very interesting version of a disappearing 9. It's very attractive with the co ordinating colours and the low volumes.

  17. I had actually made several quilts before I ever tried a 9 patch. I was like you... I got totally bored after the first two blocks! The C&S collections look great together, and I like how you've added other designers to the mix.
