'oh scrap' and whatever happens to our 'old' quilts?

So lovely to go visiting today and see one of my older quilts
still being loved
and still being used

This was a quilt I made way back in 2009. I used a pattern from one of Kathy & Sarah's earlier books, 'material obsession'. It was called 'retro starburst' by Kathy Doughty, and she used big graphics, big flowers & bold spots.
I went for big-ish flowers and a scrappy selection of pink to red strips, with a bit of 'bold' blue, brown & gold thrown in too. I remember having fun with the placement of light & darks between the blocks, giving an improv feel to the quilt. I still love that brown/blue Kaffe spot I used for the side borders & the binding. I had it professionally quilted in an all-over 'retro flower' pattern. And then I gave it away, as you do.

Do you see any of your 'old' quilts now & then too, after gifting?

  1. Lovely quilt and so great to see that it’s appreciated and being used!
I never had much luck with gifted quilts and it made me decide to no longer give quilts to family and friends as it’s not being appreciated. There’s no quilting tradition in my circle of family and friends. They just don’t get it ;-)

    1. Thanks Nicolette. I’ve often wondered about just what happens to my quilts once gifted, so it was a nice surprise to see this old one again.
I have heard of lots of stories where the quilt has not been loved and/or used, makes me really cherish those vintage quits that actually survive ... They are my inspiration!

  2. there is no other person that quilts in my family now that aunt is not with us any longer and she started quilting late in life after I did. I do see a few quilts here and there other then at my 2 daughters houses - one sister has here quilts displayed nicely on beds and my mother when alive did also - but the others I do not see and haven't a clue if they are being used.

  3. I agree it's lovely to reconnect with old quilts. I recently did this with a quilt I made almost 17 years ago for my cousin's daughter. Returned to me for repair. A new job for me but I was quite happy with the result, as I wrote about on my blog.

  5. The baby quilts I've made all got used and loved, and my daughter still uses a quilt I made for her 25 years ago. (I slept under it last time I visited her!) I always tell people to use the quilts - don't just put them in a drawer - and if they wear out, I'll make them another.

  6. It's so nice to see a quilt you made in use. I've a few out there, that I've not seen in a while, but I know they are being used.

  8. It is always fun to revisit a gifted quilt. Especially if they are showing some wear. That means they are being loved.

Thanks for linking up with Oh Scrap!

  9. That's a beautiful 'old' quilt, Linda. And it's being used and
appreciated, doesn't get any better than that!

And the ones I donate...I love spotting pictures of them with people I've never even met.
