Where there's lots started... and even a few finishes!

dipping my toes in

I'm following along with Sujata from therootconnection and the #UANDUQAL with great interest. For my first venture into the quirkiness of these delightful scrappy quilts, I've chosen to make a flying geese quilt. It's inspired by one from Roderick Kiracofe's book, Unconventional and Unexpected pg.60 a cotton 'flying geese' quilt.

I decided to revisit an earlier WiP and started out with a bunch of already made flying geese blocks, half the work done already! Of course I sifted and sorted a bit, rejected quite a few blocks, and made up a few more to fit in with my colour palette.
Made completely from my stash, lots of Denyse Schmidt  fabrics which seemed to work really well and I added in a few solids to help get 'the look'. Improv is a wee challenge for me, and working without a pattern, but hopefully working around these blocks gives me confidence to branch out more and maybe try Sujata's 'overlapping octagons' later on. All ready now for basting & quilting.

  4. With so many flying geese, I would not say that you are dipping your toes. You are diving in, giving it your all. Like it should be. I am sure this will be a gorgeous finish!!!

  9. I really like your idea of pulling out a WIP and using it for the QAL. I'm doing that with fabric pulls previously intended for less interesting projects -- so happy the QAL is happening. And as I commented over on the Scraps blog, I LOVE THIS QUILT.

  15. Really lovely, Linda. Good use of your already-made flying geese blocks. You have chosen fabrics for the strips in pretty colours, they come together beautifully with the blocks.

    1. Thanks so much Linda. I’m happy to be using up these blocks too, and enjoyed making this all work together. Improv is a bit tricky for me, lots of 2nd guessing, etc. So glad Sujata worked out an easy way to make the ‘overlapping octagons’ quilt, I might tackle that one soon-ish 

Hope you are enjoying your holiday and a Happy New year.
(I'm having trouble repling to your usual email addy so have relpied here)
