how my sewing day started ...
and how it ended ...
The 'Iced Vovo' quilt is featured in Jen Kingwell’s new book Gathered, check the link here. I began with a cutting spree, first up a batch of pretty medium-value scraps, with a few darker ones thrown in for contrast.
And then some low volume fabrics joined the party. There's a very pretty peach floral that muddies the waters just a bit, love it! I'm teaming neutral light prints up with the occasional solid too, in a variety of pale coloured tones. The solids do seem to help provide a little visual definition to my scrappy patchwork.
Still, it's all good, this is going to be a slow summer sewing project. With Christmas just around the corner, our grandchildren are almost on school holidays (read: sleepovers, outings, swimming), and a trip to Australia to see our son & DinL coming up ... things are beginning to get busy here.
p.s. Iced Vovo was named in honour of Australia’s beloved (and irresistibly tasty) biscuit. It's a shortbread-style biscuit topped with a layer of pink fondant icing, a strip of raspberry jam running down the center, and a sprinkle of desiccated coconut on the sides. I'll make sure I try one while we are over there
I'm thinking that this sweet 8" block could be perfect for those of you who are on the fence about curve piecing… nice gentle curves, no-pins-needed, and fits together perfectly when pieced.
I've got 8 blocks sewn & on the design wall now, only 92 to go🤣

I a block like that once - I think it was in the Dear Jane quilt - I made the circle piece separately and appliqued it to the block - those cookies look good!
This is an interesting block, love all the colors! Have a blessed Christmas and a peaceful New Year! Happy stitching!
Another lovely piece. I haven't attempted any curved piecing. Enjoy you holidays and your blog break. We'll see you in the new year.

Though you describe that block as "fits together perfectly when pieced," that surely must be because you used a cutting template. Right? I can't imagine cutting from a paper template and achieving such success. If you did, you're a better maker than me! I like the block, and will look into Jen's new book.
It's hard to believe you're into your summer, going on holidays, and swimming. Still, it's a great time to spend with family. Hope you have safe travels and enjoy your time with grandies. Have fun!
Well, I’m using paper templates, usually do! And free hand rotary cutting, like one would if cutting out around a dress pattern. It’s just the way I learnt.
I was actually very surprised at how nicely the pieces joined up.
My friend Glenys is making the same quilt, and she too is using the provided paper templates. Merry Christmas

Oh NO -- not another Jen Kingwell book! You know I am powerless to resist the fiddly little curves! I'm not on the fence at all about the curves; in fact, I'm pretty sure I've ripped the fence posts out and burned them up in the fireplace. No more fence for me! This Iced Vovo is shaping up to be delightful in your fabrics. I did pop over and peek at the book on Jen's web site and I was also smitten by her enlarged Rose Dream blocks. I made one of those blocks for a vintage quilt block QAL some years back, maybe 6" finished if memory serves. The blocks in Jen's new book look like they are at least 8" or 9" finished, lovely in solids as she's showing but the larger patches would also be nice for larger floral prints...
