nine patch remix

Here’s a project that was stopped short when my fabrics didn't seem to gel together. I’d been brooding over this fabric pull for ages, and this week I’ve finally narrowed things down a bit with my palette, all from the stash baskets. I have a good bit of yellow/mustard and tan, a few greys plus peach, pink, orange and warm lavender. And there’s certainly some blue happening (not surprising).

I'm using leftover geometric fabrics - a mash up of Carolyn Friedlander's fabric and Karen Lewis textiles - and teaming them up with a mix of Liberty and other prints. It's a winning geometric : floral combo!

I decided to piece lots more good old nine patch blocks again, using a mixed placement of lights & darks. It's one of my favourite blocks, and I'm super excited to get back to working on it now!

- I added the coral as something that is just a little bit “off” or unexpected

I added in a few dark blocks, et voilà  . . .

Looking at these blocks up on the design wall makes me smile this morning. I’m not sure what it is… the colours… the splashes of floral and Liberty… the pretty palette... the simple design... oh, and that 'pop' of coral.
Still thinking about layout options, but in the meantime here's the next batch all ready to go...

I know it’s not everyone's favourite to see lots of progress photos,
but I like sharing my "starts" as much as the end result
- as a journal of my thoughts & processes - AND so that maybe you too can be inspired.

Until next time, Linda

I agree, the process is just as important as the final product! (If people had to wait for a finished quilt, they might be waiting a long time for a blog post!) I love that grey floral in the close-up in the second photo! You don't happen to know the designer? It has a wonderful vintage vibe to it!

Looking great and I love seeing progress shots. Good to see how people start then evolve their projects.

There's nothing better than a nine patch and I just love your fabric choices!

Oh now I love seeing the "process"; I am working with squares right now, too--mini charms that I had collected over the years....
Your Geo/floral is just coming together so well--I like that duo. ;)))
Have fun mixing and matching hugs, Julierose

You've made a lot of progress already. I share process photos too - there is no way I can crank out finished projects fast enough to keep my blog. Pretty fabric choices.

I like progress photos and commentary. It sometimes feels like I'm sewing right along with you. I don't usually post progress photos just because I forget to take them.

I enjoy your 'thoughts and process' it's like sharing the adventure! And a Nine Patch is a classic for a good reason, by changing the color and contrast you have a new exciting work of art.

I love to see the progress; to follow a quilt from the beginning to the finish. Love your 9-patches! Makes me want to make some as well! :)

I love seeing process/progress shots. It helps me understand how your mind works and sees things. I absolutely love 9 patch/16 patch, and of course anything with HSTs

I'm as interested in the process as the finished product, so love these posts where you talk through your decision-making.

I always like the process/progress photos, they gives ideas and inspiration, and it's indicative of how long a quilt takes to make, rather than just a pretty finish.

Just realised I haven’t seen any of your last month’s posts, I seem to have dropped off the Follow list so just re-followed. So I’ve just had a great time reading one post after another. As always, I love your colour choices and how you mix them. Nine patch quilts are always a winner in my book, but I don’t think I’ve ever made one! Perhaps I need to rectify that!

I've always loved good old 9 patch blocks! I'm liking this new start of yours with the addition of pops of rich coral and also the darer blues here and there.

This basic block is a good way to use up some older stash. I love process much more than beauty shots. It's a good way to see your thought process.

P.s. I love process posts. It's definitely helped me out through the years to see and understand why people do things the way that they do or end up making certain decisions!
